Fim de semana #14

Quem me segue no Instagram (segue lá @louisemenezes) já conhece um pouco da minha nova cidade mas a verdade é que hoje faz 1 mês que nos mudamos e claro que a data não poderia passar em branco.

Tudo é diferente do que estava habituada. E isso até agora tem sido bom. Obriga-nos a uma maior adaptação mas acredito que nos dá uma maior sensação de realização quando nos damos conta da quantidade de coisas que somos capazes de absorver com o passar do tempo.

Mas falemos de coisas mais concretas. Coventry tem cerca de 300 mil pessoas e está entre as 10 maiores cidades do Reino Unido.

Está situada na região de West Midlands e fica apenas 30 km de Birmingham, a segunda maior cidade do Reino Unido.

O maior contra para mim é a distância de Londres. Se antes não precisava me planear para ir passear agora tem mesmo que ser pensado até porque as passagens são um pouquinho mais caras.

Coventry foi destruída na Segunda Guerra Mundial e por isso mesmo é uma mistura de velho com novo que primeiro estranha-se e depois entranha-se.

Ainda não conhecemos tudo mas lá chegaremos. Faz parte do processo de mudança ir conhecendo a cidade aos poucos.

Este fim de semana o Mercado de Natal chegou à cidade e foi uma deliciosa surpresa. Havia comida, havia música, luzes de Natal e um frio de rachar.

Foi um bom primeiro mês. Que os próximos sejam igualmente bons.

Anyone who follows me on Instagram (there is @louisemenezes) already knows a little about my new city but the truth is that today is our 1st month anniversary and of course the date could not go blank.

Everything is different from what I was used to. And so far so good. It obliges us to a greater adaptation but I believe it gives us a greater sense of accomplishment when we realize the amount of things we are able to absorb over time.

But let's talk about more concrete things. Coventry has about 300,000 people and is among the 10 largest cities in the UK.

It is situated in the West Midlands region and is just 30 km from Birmingham, the second largest city in the United Kingdom.

The biggest NO for me is the distance from London. If before I did not have to plan to go for a ride now it has to be planned because the tickets are a bit more expensive.

Coventry was destroyed in World War II and for this very reason it is a mixture of old and new that first we may think that is weird but than you get used to and starts loving.

We do not know everything but we will get there. It is part of the process of change to get to know the city gradually.

This weekend the Christmas Market came to town and it was a delightful surprise. There was food, there was music, Christmas lights and a crackling cold.

It was a good first month. May the next ones be equally good.

Amsterdão

A minha semana foi passada em Amsterdão, a trabalho. 

O meu primeiro pensamento foi que era uma sorte enorme poder fazer uma viagem de trabalho para uma cidade tão sensacional como Amsterdão. Depois comecei a pensar na logística, o que levar, a que horas sair, que transportes utilizar para chegar ao aeroporto e todos esses detalhes que têm que ser pensados. 

O dia chegou, eu viajei, não tive percalço absolutamente nenhum e só quando sai em Schiphol é que me bateu. Gente, tem tanto mundo lá fora. O aeroporto fica afastado do centro da cidade assim como o meu hotel. 

Encontrei-me com a minha colega que veio da Irlanda, bebemos uma cerveja no aeroporto e rumamos para o hotel.

Hotel super fofo, moderninho, adorei logo de cara! Fomos nos refrescar e nos encontramos para jantar. Conversa boa, planos para o dia seguinte e caminha que o dia seguinte seria de muito trabalho.

O nosso hotel ficava a 7 minutos do nosso escritório e a caminhada matinal uma benção. Um friozinho bom para acordar e a sensação que coisas boas estavam prestes a acontecer. E eu não estava enganada.

Mais do que o conhecimento que recebi e o que foi partilhado entre todas as pessoas que estavam lá as pessoas que conheci fizeram a minha estadia muito especial.

Estar numa formação com pessoas da Bélgica, Holanda, Alemanha, Suíça, Espanha, Dinamarca, Itália, Irlanda e Reino Unido foi simplesmente sensacional.

Conhecer as pessoas, conversar, trocar ideias, aprender, saber de onde são, o que fazem, o seu background, entender que todos vivemos no mesmo mundo, na mesma realidade, foi tão incrível que não consigo nem explicar.

Aproveitar as noites para conviver, beber um copo, jantar, trocar mais experiências, foi o melhor que poderia ter acontecido nesta viagem.

Não pensei uma única vez que estaria a perder algo por não visitar o centro da cidade tal era o meu entusiamo.

Além disso, além de países de origem diferentes, éramos todos de idades diferentes e com coisas tão novas para contar.Até consegui falar um pouco em português! 

Resumindo, valeu muito a pena cada dia que passei com este grupo de pessoas e mal posso espera pela próxima reunião daqui a 6 ou 7 meses!

Em termos de mudanças profissionais penso que fecho o ano de 2017 com um saldo extremamente positivo, com muito mais na minha bagagem do que eu poderia imaginar.

Estou feliz e admito que trabalho, entusiamo e dedicação nos levam sim a lugares melhores e nos levam sim na direcção certa. E que como se diz por aí, se der medo, vai com medo mesmo. O nosso crescimento só acontece quando saímos da nossa zona de conforto e enfrentamos os desafios de frente. 

Que 2018 seja recheado de boas experiências como esta.

My week was spent in Amsterdam, working.

My first thought was that I was so lucky to be able to make a business trip to a city as sensational as Amsterdam. Then I started thinking about the logistics, what to take, what hours to leave, what transport to use to get to the airport and all those details that have to be thought out.

The day arrived, I traveled, I had absolutely no problem at all and only when I arrived in Schiphol that it hit me. Guys, there's so much world out there.

The airport is away from the city center as is my hotel. I met my colleague who came from Ireland, had a beer at the airport and headed to the hotel.

The hotel was super cute, modern, loved it right away! We went to our rooms to put our suitcases and met for dinner. Nice talk to relax, plans for the next day as we knew it would be a lot of work.

Our hotel was 7 minutes from our office and the morning walk a blessing. It was cold but good to wake up and the feeling that good things were about to happen. And I was not mistaken.

More than the knowledge I received and what was shared among all the people who were there the people I met made my stay very special.

Being in training with people from Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark, Italy, Ireland and UK was simply sensational.

Knowing people, talking, exchanging ideas, learning, knowing where they are, what they do, their background, understanding that we all live in the same world, in the same reality, was so incredible that I cannot even explain.

Spending the evenings to socialize, drink a glass of wine, dine, exchange more experiences, was the best that could have happened on this trip.

I did not think once that I was losing something because I did not visit the city center, that was my enthusiasm.

Besides that, and apart from different countries of origin, we were all of different ages and with such new things to tell.

I even managed to speak a little Portuguese!

In short, it was worth every day I spent with this group of people and cannot wait for the next meeting in 6 or 7 months!

In terms of professional changes I think I close the year 2017 with an extremely positive balance, with much more in my luggage than I could imagine.

I am happy and I admit that work, enthusiasm and dedication lead us to better places and take us in the right direction. And as they say, if you're scared, do it anyway because it will pay off in the end.

Growth will only come when we step outside out comfort zone and face the challenges with our head high.

May 2018 be filled with good experiences like this.

Fim de semana #13

A semana passou num piscar de olhos. Trabalho. Muitas coisas novas. Muito entusiasmo e também algum cansaço. Mas nada de mais. Nada que que um fim de semana tranquilo não cure.

Mas ainda não foi este fim de semana. Sábado decidimos que independentemente do tempo iríamos para Birmingham. Estamos tão perto e queria muito começar a explorar.

Acordamos, tomamos o pequeno almoço, nos arranjamos e lá seguimos.

Primeira boa notícia: os bilhetes de comboio são infinitamente mais baratos do que esperávamos. £5,70 é um preço bastante justo. A viagem dura cerca de 20 minutos e a estação de comboios Birmingham Grand Central fica mesmo no centro da cidade.

Mal saímos da estação vemos o famoso Bullring e já começamos a ver a multidão andando de um lado para o outro.

Birmingham é uma cidade grande, cheia de gente, cheia de lojas, restaurantes e coisas para ver. Está longe de ser a minha Londres do coração mas é uma cidade boa de se ter por perto.

Temos tudo o que precisamos para um fim de semana bem passado, para fazer compras, para experimentar novos restaurantes.

Ainda temos muito para explorar mas a primeira impressão foi boa.

Quero voltar, ver mais coisas, fazer umas compras e experimentar alguns restaurantes que vi por lá. Sem dúvida voltarei para o famoso mercado de Natal e para ver a pista de gelo. Está é sem dúvida a melhor altura do ano.

O Domingo será passado em casa a arrumar as coisas para a minha viagem para Amsterdão amanhã.

Será uma semana intensa, cheia de novos desafios e de novas aprendizagens. Mas, Amsterdão por 3 dias é bom demais! Mal posso esperar.

Por isso mesmo, quero um Domingo calmo e bem relax. Leituras, séries e chá é o que temos para hoje depois da mala arrumada.

The week went by in the blink of an eye. Job. Lots of new things. Very enthusiastic and also some tiredness. But not too much. Nothing that a quiet weekend does not heal.

But it has not been this weekend yet. Saturday we decided that regardless of the weather we would go to Birmingham. We are so close and wanted so much to start exploring.

We woke up, eat breakfast and got ready to go.

First good news: train tickets are infinitely cheaper than we expected. £ 5.70 is a fair price. The journey takes about 20 minutes and Birmingham Grand Central train station is right in the center of the city.

As soon as we leave the station we see the famous Bullring and we have already begun to see the crowd walking from side to side.

Birmingham is a big city, full of people, full of shops, restaurants and things to see. It is far from being my London but it is a good city to have around.

We have everything we need for a well spent weekend, to shop, to try new restaurants.

We still have plenty to explore but the first impression was good.

I want to go back, see more things, do some shopping and try some restaurants I saw there. I will definitely return to the famous Christmas market and to see the ice rink. This is undoubtedly the best time of year.

Sunday will be spent at home packing things for my trip to Amsterdam tomorrow.

It will be an intense week filled with new challenges. But, Amsterdam for 3 days is too good! Can't wait.

For this reason, I want a calm and relaxing Sunday. Readings, sofa and tea is what we have for today after the tidy suitcase.

Primeira semana em Coventry

Primeira semana em Coventry. O tempo passa muito rápido e a mente humana tem uma capacidade incrível de se adaptar a tudo de forma muito rápida.

É bem verdade que em termos profissionais a transição foi muito tranquila porque já conheço e gosto das pessoas com quem estou a trabalhar e por isso mesmo, ainda que seja uma enorme curva de aprendizagem para mim, os rostos familiares das minhas colegas ajuda muito a que tudo se torne mais fácil.

Em termos de trabalho a semana foi cansativa tanto física como mentalmente e confesso com uma notícias inesperada. Vou para Amsterdão a trabalho. Isso mesmo. Amsterdão. Não conheço e estou mais do que animada. Serão só 3 dias mas é uma oportunidade única e que não vou deixar passar.

Coventry é uma cidade grande e mistura o velho com o novo e é completamente diferente do que me habituei em Guildford. Mas já começamos a conhecer alguns caminhos e por onde andar.

Alugamos uma casa que não estava mobiliada (escolha nossa) e o fim de semana foi mais ou menos passado entre procurar mobílias e montar mobílias.

Temos uma Ikea gigante no centro da cidade e por aqui, tal como em outros lugares, é a opção mais barata e igualmente mais funcional. O que não funciona muito bem é a questão das montagens que temos que contratar uma empresa a parte para fazer as montagens e não é um serviço muito barato. Sendo assim e como temos perninhas e bracinhos lá nos aventuramos no maravilhoso mundo das montagens dos móveis do Ikea.

Todos este processo é para nós uma delícia. Adoro escolher coisas para a casa e perder tempo a procura de decoração e isso também ajuda no processo de adaptação da nova cidade.

Por aqui o frio já chegou e esperam-se temperaturas de -2 graus para amanhã por isso o resto do domingo vai ser passado a arrumar mais algumas coisas para aquecer e no descanso para a próxima semana que se avizinha.

First week in Coventry! Time goes by so fast and the human mind has an incredible ability to adapt to everything very quickly.

It is true that professionally speaking the transition was very quiet because I already know and like the people with whom I am working and for this very reason, although it is a huge learning curve for me, the familiar faces of my colleagues helps to make things a lot easier.

In terms of work the week was tiring both physically and mentally and I must say with some unexpected news.

I'm going to Amsterdam for work. That's it. Amsterdam. I do not know and I'm more than excited. It will only be 3 days but it is a unique opportunity that I will not waste.

Coventry is a big city and mixes the old with the new and is completely different from what I got used to in Guildford. But we have already begun to know some ways and where to go.

We rented a house that was not furnished (our choice) and the weekend was more or less spent between looking for furniture and assembling furniture.

We have a giant Ikea in the center of the city and here, just like in other places, it is the cheapest and equally most functional option. What does not work very well is the issue of assemblies that we have to hire a separate company to do it for us and it is not a very cheap service. So, as we have little legs and arms, we venture into the wonderful world of Ikea furniture assemblies.

All this process is a delight to us. I love choosing things for the house and wasting time looking for decoration and this also helps in the process of adapting the new city.

Around here the cold has arrived and we are expecting temperatures of -2 degrees for tomorrow so the rest of Sunday will be spent tyding some more things to warm up and resting for next week to come.
